校長ブログにもたびたび登場しているイートン校卒業生のアレックスさんに、
高校生徒会のメンバーが学校を案内しながら、インタビューにチャレンジしました。
[Greeting questions]
Q: What brings you to Japan?
(なぜ日本に来たのですか。)
Basically, I came to Japan as a vacation. I always did my job in my country and I needed something different. So, I visited Japan. Also, I have my job in Japan, as I am a professional painter. Now, I am teaching at Kanto Gakuin while doing my own job.
（基本的には休暇として日本に来ました。自分の国でずっと仕事をしていて、何か違ったことをしたいと思っていました。なので、日本に来ようと思いました。私はプロの画家なので、日本では観光や旅行のみならず、画家としての仕事もしています。今は、画家の仕事と関東学院での授業のアシスタントを行っています。)
Q: What do you feel about Japan’s weather?
（日本の天気はどうですか。)
It is really hot, but I like it. In my country, it is also hot in summer, but in Japan, it is humid.
(とても暑いですが、私はこの気候が好きです。私の国も夏は暑いですが、日本は湿気があるのも特徴だと思います。)
Q: What Japanese food did you eat first?
（最初に食べた日本の食べ物は何ですか。)
When I came to Japan for the first time, I ate gyoza. This time, I ate tonkatsu, which was really nice.
（初めて日本に来た時に最初に食べたのはギョーザでした。今回日本に来て初めて食べたのはとんかつでした。とってもおいしかったです。)
Q: What is your favorite Japanese word?
(一番好きな日本語は何ですか。)
“別に”. This word has a lot of meanings. The meaning is vague and can be applied to everything, so I like it.
(「別に」という言葉が好きです。意味がたくさんあり、意味が曖昧でどの場面でも応用できるのが好きです。)
Q: What do you feel about Japanese students?
(日本の学生はどうですか。)
Young students are energetic and enthusiastic. They are respectful and educated well.
(若い生徒さん達は、エネルギッシュで熱狂的だと思います。みんな人に敬意を払い、学識を持った良い生徒だと思います。)

Q1: We hear that you played the music in high school. What inspired you to decide to be an artist?
(私たちは、Alexさんが高校で音楽を演奏したと聞きました。あなたがアーティストになろうと決めたきっかけは何ですか。)
I wanted to know what to do. Then, I found that I wanted to do something which I can tell stories. So, I decided to do paintings which I can express many things.
(私は昔、自分が何をするべきなのか知りたい時がありました。そして、何かしらのストーリーを伝えられることをしたいと思うようになりました。なので、私は多くのことを表現できる画家になろうと決めました。)
Q2: We hear that you can speak 5 languages. Was it hard to study?
(私たちは、Alexさんが5か国語話せると聞いています。それを勉強するのは大変でしたか。)
Actually, I didn’t study them. I acquired them. I acquired 4 languages such as French and German passively, as I had lived in the region of those languages for 10 years. I studied only Italian, which was easy, because it is similar to other European languages.
(実は私はそれらの言語を勉強していないんです。私はそれらの言語を獲得したのです。私はフランス語やドイツ語など4か国語を受動的に獲得しました、というのもそれらの言語が話されている地域に10年間住んでいましたから。唯一イタリア語だけ勉強しましたが、ヨーロッパの言語は似ているので、勉強するのは簡単でした。)
Q3: Do you have some ideas make us learn English or other languages easily?
(簡単に英語や他の言語を学べるようなアイディアはありますか。)
(Practice is really important.)
Q4: Some people say that British food isn’t tasty. What do you think about it?
(イギリスの料理はおいしくないという人もいます。これについてどう思いますか。)
They are correct lol. Only Fish and Chips is nice in the UK.
(その意見はあっていると思います笑。唯一フィッシュアンドチップスがイギリスでは美味しいと思いますよ。)
Q5: UK left EU in a few years ago. Has it caused disruption in UK?
(イギリスは数年前にEUを離脱しました。イギリス内では混乱が生じましたか。)
Economically it hasn’t been going well, but personally it hasn’t affected badly, as I haven’t lived in the UK in the last 2 years and have 2 passports.
(国の経済的にはあまり上手くいっていないと感じていますが、個人的にはイギリスにここ2年間住んでいないのと、パスポートを2つ持っているため、個人的にはあまり影響はなかったです。)

Q6: I heard you can speak 5 languages, so what do you think the most important thing when you study languages. (Ex answer: speaking)
(私はあなたが5か国語話せると聞きましたが、言語を学ぶ上で一番重要なことは何だと思いますか。)
Practice. There is no shortcut. You should speak every day. You don’t have to practice so much on a day; just practice every day. You should study little by little; 3 words on the first day, 3+ another 3 words on the second day, 6 + another 3 words on the third day, ... something like that. Also, don’t be scared of making a mistake. If you make a mistake, this is good for you, because you can learn from it and improve yourself. Making a mistake is a good chance for you to grow up.
(とにかく練習が大事です。近道はありません。とにかく毎日話すことが大事です。一日に多くの量を練習する必要はなく、毎日やることが大事です。勉強は少しずつ行うことが大事です。例えば、一日に3個の単語を覚えたら、次の日はその3個＋別の3個、また次の日はその6個とさらに別の3個．．．といった感じです。また、ミスを恐れないで下さい。もしミスをしたのであれば、それは良いことです、なぜならそのミスから学ぶことができ、あなた自身をより良くすることができますから。ミスをすることは、成長するチャンスなのです。)
Q:7 I’m interested in difference of accent such as British accent and American accent. But have you ever got in trouble because of it?
(私は、イギリスアクセントとアメリカアクセントのようなアクセントの違いに興味があるのですが、今までAlexさんはそれによって困ったことはありますか。)
Not much. But in the UK, there are many accents. We have posh accent which people in upper class use, street accent, and North accent. I’ve got in trouble of those difference a little. Some people speak English of mixed accents, which is difficult to listen to sometimes.
(イギリス英語とアメリカ英語のアクセントの違いで困ったことはあまりないです。ですが、イギリス国内でアクセントに違いがあり、上流階級の人が使う上品なアクセントや、下町のアクセント、イギリス北部のアクセントなどの違いで、少し聞き分けが難しいことは経験したことがあります。アクセントが混ざっている英語を話す人もいて、聞き取りが難しい時もあります。)
Q8: Have you ever taken Japanese trains? Is there any difference between Japanese trains and England trains?
(日本の鉄道に乗ったことがありますか。日本の鉄道とイギリスの鉄道では何か違いがありますか。)
I have. I use train when I come to this school. Train in Japan is unbelievable, because every train arrives at a station on time. Last year, the average of train’ being late in Japan was 47 seconds, which is amazing. In the UK, train delays, for example, 40 minutes, and it is worse in Netherlands. One time I was waiting for a delayed train for 5 or 6 hours in the UK, which was terrible.
(日本の電車を使ったことはあります。関東学院に来る時に使っています。日本の電車は素晴らしいです、なぜなら電車が時間通りに駅に来ますから。去年の日本の電車の遅れ(事故なし)の平均は47秒と聞きました、驚くべき数字です。イギリスでは、電車が40分遅れることもあり、オランダではそれよりもひどいです。昔イギリスで5, 6時間電車を待った時があり、とてもひどいと思いました。)

Q9: Where do you recommend me when I go to UK?
(私がイギリスに行ったときに、どこへ行くのがおすすめですか。)
Theater. You should enjoy Lion King, for example. Also, you should visit Buckingham Palace. You can also enjoy Ferris wheel in London. National gallery will be nice. You can enjoy nice exhibition and coffee there.
(劇場がいいと思います。ライオンキングとか見れると良いですね。また、バッキンガム宮殿にもいくと良いです。ロンドンで観覧車に乗るのも良いです。国立美術館に行くのも良いでしょう。展示作品やコーヒーを楽しめますよ。)
Q10: What British food do you recommend me?
(イギリスのおすすめの料理は何ですか。)
Only Fish and Chips, haha. Plus, English breakfast will be nice. It is big and has a lot of food such as mushroom, pudding, tomato, and so on.
(フィッシュアンドチップスだけだよ笑。他には、English breakfastといって、大きくてキノコやプリン、トマトなど様々な食べ物を使った食事が良いと思いますよ。)

Q: Who is the most famous Japanese person in the UK?
(イギリスで一番有名な日本人は誰ですか。)
A: Yoko Ono, I guess. It depends on people’s interest, such as baseball, rugby, art, and so on.
(小野洋子さんだと思います。野球やラグビー、芸術など、人の興味によって知っている有名人は異なると思います。)
Q: Do you like Pokémon?
(ポケモンは好きですか。)
A: Not so often, but I have watched it. I like the penguin Pokémon.
(そんな頻繁には見ないけど、見たことはありますよ。ペンギンのポケモンが好きです(ポッチャマ？)。)
Q: What do you think is the biggest difference between people in Japan and the UK?
(日本人とイギリス人の一番大きな違いは何だと思いますか。)
A: For one thing, in the UK, when one person crosses a zebra crossing although a traffic light is red, everyone goes. It’s called J-walk. In Japan, on the other hand, even if one person does so, nobody thinks it is ok and follows him/her. Another thing is that British people shout in a city while Japanese people don’t.
(一つ思い浮かぶのは、イギリスでは、横断歩道で赤信号であっても一人が渡るとみんな渡り始める、といったことです。J-walkと呼ばれています。でも日本では、一人が赤信号を無視して渡っても、他の人はそれを駄目だと思い、真似することはしないですよね。他には、イギリス人は街中で叫ぶことがありますけど、日本人はそんなことやらないかなと思います。)
Q: What was your favorite subject in high school?
(高校の時に好きだった教科は何ですか？)
A: I liked philosophy. In philosophy, I studied ancient scholars, “Who am I?”, “Where do things come from?”, something like that. What I like about philosophy is that there is no correct answer. In math, there is correct answer, but there is no answer in philosophy. No one knows the answer. You can agree/disagree with a thought, and so discuss, which I like.
(私が好きだった科目は哲学でした。哲学では、古代の学者に関することや、自分とは何者なのか、万物はどこから来たのか、といったことを勉強しました。哲学で好きなのは、正しい答えがないということです。数学には正しい答えがありますが、哲学にはありません。答えを知っている人は誰もいません。ある考えに賛成することもできれば反対することもでき、そのために、ある考えについて議論することもできます。それが私は好きです。)
Q: How many countries have you ever visited?
(今までにいくつの国を訪れたことがありますか。)
A: Maybe more than 30, I guess.
（３０か国以上かなぁ、多分。)
Q: Which area in Yokohama do you want to visit?
（横浜の中でどこに行きたいですか。)
A: Yamashita Park.
（山下公園に行きたいです。)
Q: When you draw a painting, is there any role model for you?
（絵画を描く時に、参考にしている画家はいますか。)
A: Sometimes I get inspiration from artists in Netherlands, but basically, there is no role model, because I create my art works by myself.
（オランダのアーティストからインスピレーションをもらうことはあるけど、基本的には参考にする画家はいないです。自分自身で作品を作るので。)
Q: Is it hard for you to go up the stairs to come to this school?
（階段を上ってこの学校に来るのは疲れますか。)
A: It’s really hard to get here. It’s harder when it is hot. I want you to put gondolas.
（階段を上って学校に来るのは本当にきついです。暑い日はより大変です。皆さんにゴンドラを設置して欲しいです笑)
Q: What was the best view you have seen in Japan?
（日本で見た景色の中で一番良かったのは何ですか。)
A: I like the landscape of cities such as Tokyo. I like light in dark. I liked the view from Tokyo Skytree.
（東京のような都市の風景が好きです。暗い中に光がある感じが好きです。スカイツリーからの眺めも良かったです。)
Q: What sports do you like?
（好きなスポーツは何ですか。)
A: I like football, badminton, darts, and skiing. I don’t like basketball.
（サッカー、バドミントン、ダーツ、スキーが好きです。バスケは好きじゃないです。)

Q: What would you like to study at university?
（大学で何を勉強したいですか。)
A: Media, TV. I’m interested in TV, and I want to work at a TV company.
Q: You’ve lived in Yokohama for many years, and which city do you like the best?
（横浜にずっと住んでいますが、どの都市が好きですか。)
A: Hokkaido. You can enjoy beautiful views in summer and winter.
（北海道です。夏や冬には、きれいな景色を楽しめますよ。)
Q: What do you want to do at university?
（大学で何をしたいですか。)
A: I want to study information and engineering.
（情報やエンジニアについて勉強したいです。)

A: I want to study English and talk with foreigners. I want to work at a hotel or airport.
